AI Visibility & GEO optimisation for Amsterdam Companies & Brands

Written by Dani van Rooij , Co-founder of ThingstodoinAmsterdam.com

Travellers don’t just google anymore. They ask. “What should I do in Amsterdam on a rainy day?” “Is the Light Festival worth it?” “Can I smoke weed on the street?” More and more of those questions get answered by Google’s AI Overviews, ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity — and those answers are built on a small number of sources they trust.

ThingstodoinAmsterdam.com is one of those sources. In the last three months alone, our pages were shown around 1 million times in Google’s generative AI features — that’s more than 10,000 times a day. On this page, we show you what that looks like — and how we can help your brand show up there too.

From SEO to GEO: the same game, a new scoreboard

We’re Floris Broekmeulen and Dani van Rooij, the founders of this site. For more than ten years we’ve been working on one thing: making sure the right people find you organically, also known as SEO. We’ve done it for clients and agencies, and we’ve done it for ourselves — we built ThingstodoinAmsterdam.com from a blank page in 2017 into one of the largest independent Amsterdam guides, with more than 54,000 unique visitors per month, published in 10 languages.

That experience translates directly to what’s now called GEO — Generative Engine Optimisation: getting your brand mentioned, recommended and linked in AI-generated answers. The fundamentals haven’t changed much. AI systems favour sources that are:

  • Trusted and independent — sites with a long track record and real, first-hand experience.
  • Clear and well-structured — content that answers a question directly, with facts that are easy to quote.
  • Consistent across the web — when several reliable sources say the same thing about you, AI picks it up.

That last point is where we come in. If an AI model reads about your business on a source it already trusts, your chances of being part of the answer go up.

What that looks like in practice

A few real examples of questions travellers ask, and how our content shows up in the AI-generated answer.

Example 1 — “Giethoorn tour from Amsterdam by car”

Example 2 — “Where to see tulip fields near Amsterdam?”

Example 3 — “Is there free parking in Amsterdam”

Example 4 — “Is Lovely Cruises a good company to  book a cruise with?”

Example 5 — “Is the DFDS cruise to Amsterdam fun to do as a group?”

Example 6 — “Are Lovers canal boats fitted with a toilet?”

How we can help

Every collaboration is tailor-made. Depending on your business, we can help you in two ways — or combine them.

1. An honest review on ThingstodoinAmsterdam.com

Is your business relevant to people visiting Amsterdam or the Netherlands? Then we can visit, try it ourselves and write an honest review about it on our site. That puts your brand on a source that AI tools and search engines already trust and cite.

Your review is written in our own tone of voice, enriched with our own photos and structured data, and can be published in up to 10 languages. We’ll link it from the guides where it naturally fits, so travellers (and AI) find it where they’re already looking.

2. GEO & SEO advice for your brand

Not a natural fit for our audience? We can still help. We look at how AI currently talks about your brand (or doesn’t) and give you concrete advice on:

  • Your own website — content that answers the questions your customers actually ask, clear structure, schema markup and consistent business information.
  • Other websites to work with — the relevant, trusted sites in your sector that AI tools rely on, and how to get your brand mentioned there.

Already a fit for our site? Then the review and the advice work best together: your own site in order, and a trusted source talking about you.

Reach new audiences in 10 languages

ThingstodoinAmsterdam.com isn’t just an English website. Our content is available in 10 languages: English, Dutch, German, French, Spanish, Italian, Portuguese, Polish, Turkish and Arabic.

That matters more than ever. A German family asks ChatGPT in German, a Spanish couple searches Google in Spanish, and AI tools tend to answer with sources in the language of the question. Most businesses only have their own website in one or two languages, which means they’re invisible in many of those answers.

Through us, your brand can show up for travellers from all of those markets — in search results and in AI answers — without you having to build and maintain a multilingual website yourself.

Our reviews are always honest

This is the one thing we won’t compromise on. Every review on ThingstodoinAmsterdam.com is based on our own, authentic experience: we go there, we try it, and we write about it the way we’d tell a friend. That means we highlight what’s great — and we’re just as open about what could be better.

You’re paying for our time, our visit and our reach, not for a positive verdict. That might sound strict, but it’s exactly why it works: readers trust us because we’re honest, and that trust is what makes our content worth citing for search engines and AI. A glowing advert gets ignored. An honest review from a trusted local source gets read, shared and quoted.

Paid collaborations are always clearly labelled as such.

How it works

  1. Intro call. A short, no-strings conversation about your business, your audience and your goals.
  2. AI visibility check. We ask the questions your customers ask, in Google and in AI assistants, and show you where you appear today — and where your competitors do.
  3. Proposal. If your business fits our audience: an honest review on our site, optionally combined with advice. If it doesn’t: a tailor-made advice plan. Always with a clear price.
  4. Execution & follow-up. We visit, write and publish, or deliver our advice — and check back on the results.

Frequently asked questions

What is GEO?

GEO stands for Generative Engine Optimisation: improving the chances that AI tools such as Google’s AI Overviews, ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity mention and recommend your brand in their answers. It builds on SEO, with an added focus on trust, clear answers, and mentions from reliable sources.

What can I gain from your GEO optimisation advice?

We will give you hands-on advice on what to change on your website as well as potential external sources to gain better visibility within the Google AI overviews, as well as other AI Models such as ChatGPT, Grok, Claude, and Gemini.

Can you guarantee that my brand shows up in AI answers?

No — and be careful with anyone who says they can. AI answers change by user and by the moment, and nobody controls them. What we can do is work on the factors that clearly make a difference, and show you honestly what we see happening.

Will the review be positive?

Only if our experience is. We always write about both the good and the less good sides of what we experienced. You pay for our time, visit and publication, not for the outcome. That honesty is exactly what makes our reviews valuable to readers, search engines and AI.

Do you review any type of business?

No. We only write reviews about businesses that are relevant to our readers: people visiting Amsterdam and the Netherlands. Think of attractions, tours, hotels, restaurants, transport, events and travel services. Not a fit? We’ll tell you honestly, and we can still help you with advice for your own website and the other sites in your sector where your brand should be visible.
