Stromma canal tours

You haven’t really “seen” Amsterdam until you’ve experienced it by boat, and one of the oldest and most reputable companies is Stromma boat rides. They offer a number of fantastic cruises that take you past many of the city’s highlights. From standard canal cruises in Amsterdam to energising pedal boats, it’s all possible with Stromma. In addition to their various boat tours, Stromma also offers complete packages. For example, you can combine a boat tour with a visit to one of the most enjoyable museums in Amsterdam!

Stromma Netherlands is part of the Swedish Stromma Group (Strömma Turism & Sjöfart). Starting in 1912 with Rederij Bergmann and Meijer’s Rondvaarten (1920s), the company grew from Amsterdam’s oldest and largest shipping company to a tourist company. Today, you can recognise Stromma’s boats by the often visible yellow line on the outside of the boat, and the branding “Canal Tours Amsterdam”.  Together with a big red S from Stromma on the boat.

100 Highlights Cruise from Stromma

Amsterdam is famous for its beautiful “Canal Belt” for a reason. Did you know that there are more than 100 kilometers of canals running through the stunning city centre of Amsterdam? That’s reason enough to explore Amsterdam with a Stromma canal cruise. The 100 Highlights Cruise takes place on traditional Amsterdam canal boats, affectionately known as “bathtubs.” These long boats with glass roofs are an excellent choice in cold and unpredictable Dutch weather. During a boat tour, you’ll see the city from the best vantage points!

Open Boat Tours

We believe the best way to explore the city is on an electric boat. It’s intimate and because of its size, you can navigate through smaller spaces that large boats can’t access, so you can discover some gems on your cruise. On your tour, the captain will tell you fascinating stories about the city, and give you insider tips and recommendations on where to visit. This is also a great outing for families, and children also get a colour-in activity on board.

These boats above are the XL Open Boats of Canal Tours Amsterdam. Which can have 40 people aboard. We advise you with a smaller group to take the open boats for a maximum of 12 people. Since the intimacy part is one of the best parts of this cruise.

Dinner Cruises

In addition to the regular canal cruises, Stromma Canal Tours Amsterdam offers other unique ways to explore the city! You can indulge in delicious pizza on the Pizza Cruise, or enjoy great wines paired with cheese on the Cheese & Wine Cruise. As you savour the food and drinks, you can take in the vibrant city in all its beauty. The skipper will share interesting facts about the landmarks you pass during the cruise. The combination of dining out, sightseeing and relaxation make for a memorable experience.

The Pizza Cruise lasts 1.5 hours and departs from Stromma Damrak at 17:45. The Cheese & Wine Cruise lasts about 75 minutes and also departs from Stromma Damrak at 20:15. Both cruises operate daily between April and September. Check the Stromma website for any updated departure times.

Pedal Boats

Amsterdam is world-famous for its many cyclists, and biking is an easy way to explore the city. However, what’s even more fun is doing this on the water, in a Stromma pedal boat. It’s a great way to stay active while navigating the canals at your own pace. You can stop whenever you like to take beautiful photos, and if you bring along some food and drinks, you have the perfect setting for a small picnic on the water. Read our full review of Stromma pedal boat rental here!

Stromma’s pedal boats are suitable for up to four people and are rented per boat. The rental time is one hour.

Stromma Amsterdam Light Festival

If you’re in Amsterdam for the light festival (around December and January), you cannot miss a canal cruise. The Stromma takes you past all the installations that form part of the festival. Each year, the Amsterdam Light Festival has a different theme, and artists create magnificent light installations that are dotted around the city centre. You’ll also hear interesting information about each installation, and what they represent.

We recommend choosing the closed boat tour if the weather is wet and cold, and an open boat if the weather is milder for better visibility.

Stromma excursions

In addition to regular canal cruises, open boat tours, pedal boating and dinner cruises, Stromma also offers a variety of bus excursions that allow you to experience great places beyond Amsterdam. For around 6.5 hours of fun and sightseeing, you can book the Volendam, Edam & Windmills Bus Tour. Or, combine a fun bus tour to the Zaanse Schans with a canal cruise through Amsterdam—the perfect day trip! Another favourite is the Rotterdam, Delft, The Hague and Amsterdam Canal Cruise excursion. This 10-hour bus tour even includes a visit to Madurodam, the mini theme park.
