Useful information & tips

Boarding locations

If you’re opting for open boat tour with Stromma in Amsterdam, it’s useful to know that there are three different departure points, also known as boarding locations. You can choose from Stromma Damrak (Pier 6), Stromma Rijksmuseum, or Stromma Leidseplein.

This is convenient if you’d like to combine your open boat tour with a visit to the Rijksmuseum, Van Gogh Museum, Stedelijk Museum, or Moco Museum. The route of the boat depends on the boarding location. For example, if you depart from Damrak, you’ll sail past the Skinny Bridge, the Seven Bridges, and through various smaller canals. If you choose to board at Rijksmuseum, you’ll pass landmarks like the world-famous Anne Frank House  and Westerkerk, and sail along the Amstel River.

All three locations are easily accessible by public transport. If you prefer to drive, we recommend choosing the Leidseplein departure point, where you can park at Q-Park Byzantium. From there, it’s about a 3-minute walk to the departure point.

Boat times

The cruise times for the open boat tour vary, depending on the departure point. Generally, there are multiple departures per day from all three locations. For the most up-to-date departure times, check the Stromma website. The schedule is also dependent on the size of the boat. There are boats that accommodate a maximum of 12 people, others up to 20 people, and some up to 35 people.

Food & drinks

There are no food and drinks available onboard, but you can buy some refreshments from a Stromma shop before you leave. Each location has a shop where you can buy drinks and snacks for the trip. The shops also have toilets, which is convenient since there are no restroom facilities on board.

The weather

The weather in the Netherlands is quite unpredictable. For this reason, Stromma allows you to reschedule your tickets up to an hour before departure. You can do this by contacting customer service, but keep in mind that rescheduling is subject to availability, so it’s important to check in advance. If it does rain and you still want to go on the boat ride, the boats can be covered with a canopy to keep you dry.

Stromma Shop Leidseplein

For our open boat tour, we opted to leave from Stromma Leidseplein, which is easy to spot thanks to the Stromma flags and signage. Upon arrival, we went to the shop, where a friendly staff member welcomed us, scanned our tickets and offered us the option to use the restroom or grab some snacks and drinks for the tour. He let us know we could relax on the terrace outside until the captain arrived. The terrace has a cozy atmosphere with a lovely view of the canals, making it an ideal place to wait, especially on a clear day.

Departure from Stromma Leidseplein

The captain personally came to the terrace to escort us to the boat. We had opted for a weekday tour in early August. Despite it being summer vacation, there were only five of us onboard, giving us plenty of room and making the experience feel even more intimate. The captain, a friendly Amsterdam local, guided us from the terrace to the dock. To board, we walked down a short set of three steps, with the skipper offering assistance where needed. Once everyone was comfortably seated, the canal cruise began!

The route

During the open boat tour, we passed by many of Amsterdam’s iconic landmarks. Even though we had seen several of these sights before, the captain shared fascinating facts we hadn’t heard, adding a fresh and educational touch to the experience. Below are some of the key spots we sailed past.

Klaar om te vertrekken!

Rijksmuseum

After just a few minutes on the water, we passed one of Amsterdam’s most iconic and popular museums: the Rijksmuseum. Famous not only for its extensive collection of artworks chronicling Dutch history, the museum is also celebrated for its breathtaking and impressive architecture. Inside, you’ll discover masterpieces by renowned artists such as Rembrandt van Rijn, Frans Hals and Johannes Vermeer, among many others. If you’re visiting Amsterdam, the Rijksmuseum is an absolute must-see!

Spiegelgracht

After gliding under two bridges, we turned right onto the renowned Spiegelgracht. Named after the prominent “De Spiegel” family, this canal certainly lives up to its name with its mirror-like, calm waters. In winter, sailing through it at night is a magical experience, as the trees are beautifully adorned with hundreds of twinkling lights, creating a wonderfully romantic atmosphere.

The Amstel

As we sail along the Amstel, the only river flowing through Amsterdam, it’s fascinating to learn that the city derives its name from this very river. Along the way, we pass the iconic Amstel locks, built in 1673 to improve water circulation. These locks are a striking sight, and it’s no surprise they’ve earned the status of a national monument.

The Amstel Hotel

Nestled along the banks of the Amstel River is the magnificent Amstel Hotel, a luxurious 5-star establishment. Not only does it offer stunning views of the river, but its impressive architecture is equally captivating. Located in the heart of Amsterdam, the hotel boasts 55 rooms and 24 suites, making it a prime location for engagements – and it’s easy to see why!

From the boat, you get a beautiful view of the luxury Amstel Hotel.

Skinny Bridge/Magere Brug

There’s no better view of the Skinny Bridge  than from the water! During the open boat tour, you sail right under this famous bridge, also known as the “Love Bridge.” This iconic drawbridge is especially captivating at night when the lights attached to it illuminate, making for a magnificent sight.

Dancing houses

You can’t leave Amsterdam without seeing the famous “Dancing Houses.” During a boat tour, you’ll see these old canal-facing houses that appear to be “dancing” because they’re slightly tilted.

Seven Bridges

This is a spot where you need to pause, as this location is absolutely photo-worthy! The seven bridges are built in perfect alignment, creating the illusion of a single bridge. It’s a truly iconic Amsterdam view that you must see at least once.

The captain shares fun and interesting facts throughout the cruise!

The “Golden Bend”

During the Stromma open boat tour, you’ll also pass through the Golden Bend, the most prestigious section of the Herengracht. Historically, and even today, it is home to some of Amsterdam’s wealthiest residents. Each house is unique and has its own history. Did you know that the official residence of the mayor is located here? These canal houses are truly impressive.

From the water, you also get an amazing view of the Westerkerk.

Our experience

The Stromma open boat tour is an ideal way to explore Amsterdam’s most stunning highlights in a more intimate setting. From the moment the captain greeted us on the terrace, we felt there was a great personal touch, that made it feel less “touristy”.

We loved the convenience of having a shop nearby to use the restroom or grab a snack before the tour. With the sloops accommodating smaller groups compared to traditional canal boats, the experience felt more personal, with plenty of opportunities to ask questions. The atmosphere on board was laid-back, and the captain was extremely friendly and knowledgeable. No question was too difficult, and he always had the perfect answer.

On our tour, we sailed in an electric boat that holds up to 12 people. With just five of us (plus the captain), we had plenty of space to sit comfortably. That said, we felt it would be a bit tight if the boat was fully booked.

Overall, we had a fantastic experience on the open boat tour and would  recommend it to family and friends. While it might cost a little more than a regular canal cruise, the intimate setting and personal attention make it well worth the extra cost.

Stromma also offers XL open boats, which can accommodate up to 40 people. We recommend this option if you’re with a large group or prefer being on a bigger boat.
